It's the sudden stop at the end that will kill you

Many people have a fear of heights. It’s not the fall that will kill you, it’s the sudden stop at the end.

I work with thousands of people to help them change or to discover their dream and get on the path to achieving that dream. Change and pursuing your dream is difficult. There will be times when you want to stop or to take a break. The problem is, once you do stop, it takes great effort to start up again. Call it inertia or a reversing of momentum, the key is not to stop but instead to slow down a bit.

Let me demonstrate the impact of a full stop by looking at the cost of an intersection stop sign. Coming to a full stop in your car takes 2 ounces of fuel to accelerate. Multiply that times a typical 3000 cars per day at that intersection and the extra cost of fuel is usd51,363 per year. Significant.

There is a cost for you to come to a full stop when pursuing change or your dream. I’m not asking you to break any laws, but I am asking you to consider when pursuing your dream, rolling stops. A rolling stop entails lowering your action plan target or taking smaller steps to ensure that you don’t come to a complete stop. So instead of exercising 5 times a week for a while then end up 0 times after 3 months, it would be smarter to set an exercise target of 1 to 2 times per week. It may not be enough, but if you maintain it over a long time, it will make a significant difference.
